6 Questions You Need to Ask Your Wedding Photographer

Choosing your wedding photographer is a huge task, they are one of the most important vendors for your special day! A lot of couples don’t know where to begin, which is why I’ve compiled this list of six questions you need to ask your wedding photographer before you sign on the dotted line!

What Is Included in Your Wedding Packages?

This is one of the most important questions to ask before hiring a wedding photographer! That way you know exactly what you’re paying for and what they have to offer. It will help you understand things like how much coverage they can offer for your day or how you will receive your photos after they’ve been edited. I currently offer four different wedding day packages, based around how many hours you will need documented. Each of these packages includes an extensive pre-wedding consultation, a full print release, and edited photos which are easily downloadable from my online gallery! You can expect to receive your photos within 6-8 weeks from your wedding day!

What is Your Experience?

Is the photographer that you’re interested in hiring newer to the photography world or have they been shooting for a long time? There is no shame in hiring a photographer that is just starting out. Every photographer had to start somewhere, but keep this in mind before you hire them. They are still building their portfolio and may not have multiple wedding galleries to show you, but they will probably charge you less. Hiring an experienced photographer will allow you to be less hands on. Most-likely they’ve been in the industry for years and they know the ins and outs of wedding photography. You will pay more, but you will be paying for their years of knowledge and expertise. I have been doing photography since 2009, shooting weddings professionally since 2015, and have loved every chance to capture the wonderful couples that choose me for their wedding day.

How Often Will We Communicate?

Being on the same page as your wedding photographer is extremely important so that everything runs smoothly! Asking them how often they will be in touch or how you will communicate is something you should always seek out the answer to. I thrive on communication with my couples and send emails out regularly. These emails include reminders and check ins every so often so that my brides are never left in the dark. I am very responsive and make sure that if anyone emails me, I always email back within 24 hours! After our initial consultation, you will also have my personal cell phone number. That way you can text me or call me anytime if you have questions.

What Style(s) of Photography Do You Specialize In?

This question will help you understand in which area your chosen photographer will do best. Someone who does amazing family photography may not be the best person to choose for a wedding day and vise versa! It also helps to get an idea of the way they will edit your photos after they’ve been taken. I specialize in engagement, bridal, and wedding photography. Personally, I prefer to shoot all of my couples with a mix of candid and posed shots. That way I can capture your memories in a beautiful and natural way! As for my editing style, I lean towards light and airy with a filmy touch. I usually deliver full galleries of color with a few black and whites mixed in.

Do You Have Backup Equipment or a Second Shooter?

It’ll always give you peace of mind to know that your photographer is prepared for any situation, including equipment failures or hiccups. It’s also great to know whether your photographer works alone or with a second shooter on your special day! Knowing this information will help with timeline management and making sure your photographer is prepared for anything. I always keep extra equipment on me, from SD cards and batteries to an extra camera body. For portrait sessions, I will typically bring an assistant to help carry my gear and look for anything that seems out of place. Most of my wedding packages include a second shooter depending on how many people will be attending. These days, intimate weddings are becoming the norm and second shooters are not always necessary if there are only going to be a handful of guests attending!

Do You Backup Your Photos?

Many couples ask this question, since photography is an investment and they want to ensure that their photos are safe. Always make sure you ask if your photos are backed up and safely stored! Every photographer does this a little differently.  After any session or wedding day I do a double backup of photos!  I offload your memories from my memory card (get it?) and into a folder with your name on my computer. From there, I do another backup to our personal server. That way I know that if something were to happen to my computer for any reason, I have an extra copy of every photo at hand.

I hope this has lifted some stress and helped guide you and your other half to asking the right questions before hiring a wedding photographer!
